The silence between the notes...

A friend mentioned something in her blog today that's been on my mind as well. We write for ourselves, as a type of therapy, but we also write for others, offering them a portal into our world, if not a mirror in which to see themselves reflected. As writers (and especially as writers of blogs), we must constantly be aware of how much we are sharing and the general tone with which we are doing so. Our joys and successes are relatively uncomplicated to convey, while our sorrows and failures are more difficult, lest we come across as ungrateful. Nevertheless, both extremes are part of the human condition, and only by drawing from all different kinds of experiences can we hope to portray the truest possible big picture.

Lately, I know, there's been one piece of news in particular that those close to me are waiting on, myself included. The truth is, I still don't have a job for next year, despite nearly 40 applications to schools, both public and parochial, in this county and two others. I guess I was (subconsciously?) putting off posting until I could share success on that front. But just as there is silence between the notes of a symphony, there are relatively uneventful stretches between the mile markers of our journeys. We may lose ourselves a little between those mile markers and fail to see that we are making progress, and we may even be forced to take detours, which may intensify feelings of frustration and self-doubt, but as long as we don't give up altogether, experience has shown us that most of the time we'll eventually prevail.

So, as much as I'd hoped to be able to share news of a job in this, my fourth, post, know that I haven't turned off the road either. I've spent time with friends and family, read some great books, done a fair bit of cooking, taken many long walks, as well as some shorter ones, completed two ripple afghans for Project Linus and begun a third.
And, while it may not be news, I wanted to share with you one of the many hibiscus flowers I see on my walks to and from the library...
